High Domain Rank, No Traffic: What 280 Link Prospects Actually Measure

What did this study find?

We pulled every domain linking to two or more of the eight agencies ranking for answer engine optimization keywords, filtered for domain rank and spam, and got 280 qualified prospects. We then queried estimated organic traffic for each one. 251 returned data. 29 returned nothing and are excluded from every percentage below.

101 of those 251, 40.2%, show under 200 estimated organic visits a month. 142, 56.6%, show under 1,000. Eleven show exactly zero. The highest ranked domain in the set, at DataForSEO domain rank 283, is estimated at 13 visits a month across 5 keywords.

Rank and traffic are not unrelated. Median estimated traffic above domain rank 80 is 1,176, against 362 below it. The finding is narrower than that: a large minority of the domains a link filter tells you to chase have almost no readership.

This started as our own link prospecting, not as research. Our July 2026 backlink audit counted 28 referring domains for builddontbeg.com, and none of them passed meaningful equity. So we did what the standard playbook says: find the domains linking to the people outranking you, filter for authority, and work the list.

The filter produced a list. Before pitching anyone we checked whether the domains on it had readers. Two in five did not.

Method

Everything here reproduces from one script, scripts/link-gap-scan.py, with a DataForSEO credential set.

  1. Take the eight domains ranking for the target keywords as of 31 July 2026: firstpagesage.com, seoprofy.com, outerboxdesign.com, digitalagencynetwork.com, directiveconsulting.com, sovyn.com, polarisagency.com, sureoak.com.
  2. Pull live referring domains for each from backlinks/referring_domains/live, up to 1,000 per competitor.
  3. Intersect locally and keep domains linking to two or more of them. DataForSEO's own domain intersection endpoint requires a link to every target at once, which with eight competitors returns almost nothing.
  4. Drop anything already linking to us, plus directories, social networks and platform domains, then filter on rank, spam score and nofollow. That leaves 280.
  5. Query dataforseo_labs/google/domain_rank_overview/live for each of the 280, one domain per request, for United States English results.

Step 5 has to be one domain per request. That endpoint accepts exactly one task per call, and sending a batch returns a success at the top level while every task after the first carries an error and no result. It does not fail loudly. At 100 domains per call an earlier version of this scan measured 3 domains and reported percentages off those three.

Domains that return no result are stored as null and excluded from every percentage. Absent data is not zero traffic, and scoring it as zero is exactly how a scan like this manufactures the finding it was hoping for.

The distribution

Estimated monthly organic traffic across the 251 measured domains. Median 456. Range 0 to 6,981,386.

The domains a rank filter likes most

These are the highest ranked domains in the set that are estimated under 200 visits a month. Every one clears a rank and spam filter. Every one would appear near the top of a prospect list sorted by authority.

landingroles.com sits at domain rank 170 with one ranking keyword and an estimate of zero. aiqlabs.ai links to seven of the eight competitors, which is the strongest possible signal that it is an active linker in this niche, and is estimated at 5 visits a month.

The claim of ours that did not hold

An earlier internal version of this said: "of the 74 domains at DR 80+ that link to two or more of them, 30 get under 200 organic visits a month, so just over 40%."

That is wrong. Measured, 67 prospects sit at domain rank 80 or above and 20 of them, 29.9%, come in under 200. The 40% was the whole set figure applied to a subset it does not describe. We are publishing it because an audience that checks numbers deserves to see the one that failed, and because the difference between 40% and 30% is the difference between a finding and a talking point.

The same earlier version called the metric DR while quoting values above 100. Ahrefs Domain Rating runs 0 to 100. DataForSEO domain rank runs 0 to 1000. This set runs from 25 to 283. They are different scales, and a number above 100 cannot be a DR value.

What this does not show

  • The traffic figure is DataForSEO's estimate, not analytics from the sites. Read it as an order of magnitude. A domain shown at 6 visits is not measured at 6 visits, it is modelled as very low.
  • 29 of the 280 returned no traffic data at all and are excluded. If those skew low, 40.2% understates the effect. If they skew high, it overstates it. We do not know which.
  • One snapshot, 8 September 2026, in one niche. Whether this holds in other verticals is untested, and we would rather someone check than assume.
  • Low organic traffic does not make a link worthless. It makes it a different thing from what the prospect list implied, and worth pricing accordingly.

Take the dataset

All 280 rows, with domain, domain rank, spam score, which of the eight competitors each links to, and the traffic and keyword figures where they were returned. Published under CC BY 4.0, so use it, check it, or argue with it.

Questions

Does a high domain rank mean a site gets traffic?

Not reliably. Across 251 measured link prospects, 101 of them, 40.2%, showed under 200 estimated organic visits a month despite clearing a domain rank and spam filter. Rank and traffic do correlate in the set, with a median of 1,176 estimated visits above domain rank 80 against 362 below it, but a large minority of high rank domains have almost no readership.

What is the difference between Ahrefs DR and DataForSEO domain rank?

Ahrefs Domain Rating runs from 0 to 100. DataForSEO domain rank runs from 0 to 1000. They are different scales and the numbers are not interchangeable. A figure above 100 cannot be a DR value, so quoting one as DR is a sign the metric has been misread.

How was the traffic figure measured?

It is DataForSEO’s estimated traffic volume from the domain_rank_overview endpoint, for United States English results, retrieved on 8 September 2026. It is a model estimate, not analytics data from the sites themselves, and it should be read as an order of magnitude rather than a visit count.

Can I get the dataset?

Yes. The full 280 row JSON file is published at builddontbeg.com/data/link-authority-traffic-2026-09-08.json under a CC BY 4.0 licence. It carries the domain, domain rank, spam score, which competitors it links to, and the traffic and keyword figures where they were returned.

How do I reproduce the study?

Run scripts/link-gap-scan.py from the builddontbeg.com repository with a DataForSEO credential set. It pulls referring domains for the eight competitors, intersects them locally, filters on rank and spam, then queries estimated traffic one domain per request and prints the distribution from the run itself.

Build Don't Beg does answer engine optimization and database reactivation for service businesses. If you want the scan run against your own niche, the script is in the open and so is the method.
