GoHighLevel vs HubSpot for Small Business: The Builder's Honest Comparison

10 min read

The short answer: In the GoHighLevel vs HubSpot decision, a 5 to 20 person local service business that runs on calls, texts, and booked appointments usually gets more for less with GoHighLevel. A business with a real marketing team, a long sales cycle, or a big software stack is often better off paying more for HubSpot. Before you pick either, settle who builds it, who maintains it, and whose name the account is in.

Comparison card asking GoHighLevel or HubSpot. GoHighLevel is $97 a month for calls, texts, and bookings. HubSpot is the pick when you have a marketing team.

I build on GoHighLevel. Most of my week is spent inside it, wiring up missed call text back, booking flows, and follow up that actually follows up. So you would expect me to tell you GoHighLevel wins every time.

It does not. There are businesses I would point straight at HubSpot, and I will tell you exactly which ones. If I only ever recommended the tool I build on, you would have no reason to trust anything else I say.

Which is better for a small business, GoHighLevel or HubSpot?

GoHighLevel is usually the better fit for local service businesses; HubSpot is usually the better fit for marketing led and B2B teams.

If you run a local service business with 5 to 20 people, live and die by phone calls, texts, and booked appointments, and want one system for all of it, GoHighLevel usually fits better and costs less to run.

If you have a real marketing team, a longer sales cycle, lots of content, and plans to plug into a big stack of other software, HubSpot is often the better buy, even though it costs more.

The rest of this post is the why, starting with the number everyone skips: what each one actually costs per month once it is running.

Is GoHighLevel a CRM, and is HubSpot a CRM?

Yes, both are CRMs at the core, but they were built for different buyers.

HubSpot started as inbound marketing software and grew into a full customer platform: CRM, marketing, sales, service, content, and data tools sold as separate "hubs." It is polished, deep on reporting, and built for teams that have people whose whole job is marketing or sales operations.

GoHighLevel was built for agencies serving local businesses. It bundles CRM, pipelines, calendars, text and email, phone, forms, funnels, reviews, and automation into one account. Agencies can rebrand it and run it for clients, which is why you will often see it under a different name. That is not a trick. It is how the platform is designed to be resold.

Is GoHighLevel only for agencies?

No. A single business can sign up directly; HighLevel's pricing page describes the Starter plan as built for smaller businesses and solo marketers, with 3 sub-accounts.

But it was designed with an agency in the middle, and that matters later when we talk about ownership.

How much does GoHighLevel cost per month compared to HubSpot?

For a 5 to 20 person service business, GoHighLevel Starter is $97 per month for the whole team. HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional starts at $800 per month if you pay annually, plus a required $3,000 onboarding fee, and it includes 3 seats. As of October 2026, prices change.

1. What you would actually pay per month

Two different jobs. Two different bills. This is the platform subscription only.

Calls, texts, and bookings

GoHighLevel Starter

$97 per month

Unlimited users, so 5 people and 20 people pay the same subscription. Monthly billing is $97 per month. Annual billing is $970 per year. Texts, calls, and email are extra.

Marketing automation

HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional

$800 per month

That price is annual billing. Monthly billing starts at $890. Includes 3 core seats. Extra core seats start at $45 per month. Required onboarding is $3,000, once.

If you only need a CRM, HubSpot Free is $0 for up to 2 users. A 5 to 20 person team does not fit on Free once more than 2 people need a login. HubSpot Starter is normally $20 per seat per month. For a limited time, new customers pay $7 per seat per month on an annual commitment, or $10 per seat per month with no annual commitment. Seat math from that published rate, not a quote: 5 seats is $100 per month at the normal price, and 20 seats is $400. GoHighLevel has no free plan. The entry price is still $97 per month.

2. Usage

The prices above are the subscription. They are not the whole bill.

On GoHighLevel, phone numbers, texts, calls, and email are pay as you go. They are not inside the $97. If an agency runs the account, ask for their usage rates in writing. They can mark those rates up.

On HubSpot, email is included up to the plan limit, and AI features spend HubSpot Credits. Starter includes 500 credits a month. Extra credits are pay as you go. Phone and text are not included in the HubSpot prices above. Seats and the onboarding fee are what move that bill.

3. The build

Neither platform runs your business out of the box. Somebody has to set up the pipeline, calendars, forms, automations, and integrations. With HubSpot Professional, part of that is the required onboarding fee above. With GoHighLevel, you either build it yourself, hire a builder, or start from a snapshot and customize it.

4. Upkeep

Here is the one nobody budgets for. Automations break when your offer changes, your phone numbers change, or a staff member leaves. Someone has to watch the system. If that someone is you, it costs hours. If it is a builder, it costs a retainer. Either way, put it in the math.

The honest summary: a 5 to 20 person service business that wants calls, texts, and bookings usually pays $97 per month on GoHighLevel Starter, unlimited users included, plus usage. HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional starts at $800 per month billed annually, plus $3,000 to get started. HubSpot is the cheaper subscription when you only need the free CRM or Starter seats.

What features does a local service business actually use every week?

Missed call text back, booking with reminders, one inbox for texts, review requests, and old lead reactivation.

  • Missed call text back. Someone calls, nobody answers, they get a text within a minute. GoHighLevel does this natively.
  • Online booking with reminders. Calendars, confirmations, and reminder texts in the same system as the contact record.
  • Two way texting from one inbox. Text, email, and social messages in one place your front desk can actually use.
  • Review requests. Ask happy customers for a review after the job, automatically.
  • Old lead reactivation. Reaching back out to people who asked for a quote and went quiet. We wrote a whole 14 day reactivation guide on this.

HubSpot can do versions of most of these, but often through higher tiers or connected apps. GoHighLevel was built around them.

When is HubSpot the better choice?

When you have a marketing team, a long sales cycle, or a big integration stack. Here is where I would tell you to buy HubSpot, no hedging:

  • You have a marketing team. HubSpot's content, campaign, and reporting tools are deeper and more polished.
  • Your sales cycle is long and complex. Multiple decision makers, quotes, deal stages that take months. HubSpot's sales tools shine here.
  • You need a huge integration ecosystem. HubSpot's App Marketplace connects it to a very large catalog of other tools.
  • You want it to just work for a small team, for free. The free CRM is a solid place to start if all you need is contacts and deals.
  • Your people will not learn a new interface. HubSpot is generally easier to pick up. A tool that does not get used is the most expensive tool you can buy.

When is GoHighLevel the better choice?

When calls, texts, and bookings are the business, and you want one bill instead of several.

  • Cost per feature. One subscription covers what would often take several tools elsewhere.
  • Phone and text first businesses. Calls, texts, and bookings are the core, not an add-on.
  • Automation for local service. Workflows for reminders, no shows, reviews, and follow up are fast to build. (More on how we approach automation.)
  • Done for you builds. Because agencies can run it, you can hand the whole thing to a builder and not touch the settings.

The catch: GoHighLevel rewards a good build and punishes a bad one. It can do a lot, which means it can also do a lot wrong. Read my honest GoHighLevel review for the full list of pros and cons.

Who owns the account and the data if the agency walks away?

With HubSpot you usually own it outright; with GoHighLevel, it depends on whose account your sub-account lives under. Here is the part that should be first on every comparison, and almost never is.

With HubSpot, you usually sign up yourself. The account is in your name. If you hire a consultant and fire them, the account and data stay with you.

With GoHighLevel, many small businesses get it through an agency. That is fine, until the relationship ends. Then you find out whether your contacts, conversations, phone numbers, and automations live in an account you can take with you, or in a sub-account under the agency's umbrella.

Before you sign with anyone, including me, ask these four questions:

  1. Whose name is the account in?
  2. Can I export all my contacts and conversation history at any time?
  3. Who owns the phone numbers, and can I port them out?
  4. If we part ways, will you transfer the sub-account or snapshot to me?

The four ownership questions to ask before you sign with any agency.

If the answers are vague, walk. A good builder will put these in writing. When we build for clients, ownership is settled before anything gets built.

FAQ

Which is better, HubSpot or GoHighLevel?

For local service businesses that run on calls, texts, and appointments, GoHighLevel is usually the better value. For businesses with marketing teams, long sales cycles, or heavy integration needs, HubSpot is often the better fit.

How much is GoHighLevel per month?

HighLevel's pricing page, as of October 2026, lists Starter at $97 per month or $970 per year, Unlimited at $297 per month or $2,970 per year, and Agency Pro at $497 per month or $4,970 per year. Unlimited users on every plan. Starter includes 3 sub-accounts. Phone, text, and email are pay as you go on top. The optional AI Employee add-on is $50 or $97 per month per sub-account. Prices change.

Is GoHighLevel a CRM system?

Yes. It is a CRM with pipelines, calendars, texting, email, phone, forms, funnels, reviews, and automation in one account.

Is HubSpot a CRM?

Yes. HubSpot's Smart CRM sits at the center of its platform, with marketing, sales, service, content, and data tools sold as separate hubs on top. The free CRM covers up to 2 users.

Is GoHighLevel only for agencies?

No. It was designed for agencies to resell, but a single business can sign up directly and use it on the Starter plan, which includes 3 sub-accounts.

Which is cheaper for a small business?

For a 5 to 20 person service business that wants calls, texts, and bookings, GoHighLevel Starter is $97 per month for unlimited users, plus usage. HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional starts at $800 per month billed annually, includes 3 core seats, and adds a required $3,000 onboarding fee. If you only need a CRM, HubSpot Free is $0 for 2 users and Starter is $20 per seat per month at the normal rate. As of October 2026. Prices change.

Who are HubSpot's main competitors?

For a small service business, the comparison I get asked about most is GoHighLevel. The right comparison depends on the job: an all in one system for calls, texts, and bookings is a different purchase from a sales CRM for a B2B team.

What are the top 3 CRM systems?

There is no single top 3 for every business. Pick the one your team will actually use for the job you have. For local service, start by comparing GoHighLevel and HubSpot on total monthly cost and ownership, not on feature counts.

Can you use HubSpot and GoHighLevel together?

Yes, through integrations or automation tools that sync contacts between them. It works, but you are paying for two systems and maintaining a sync. Most small businesses are better off choosing one.

How hard is it to move from HubSpot to GoHighLevel?

Contacts and basic fields move easily with a CSV export and import. Automations, email templates, and pipelines have to be rebuilt. Plan for the rebuild, and keep HubSpot running until the new system is tested.

If you are stuck between the two, I am happy to walk through your numbers and tell you honestly which one I would pick for your business, even if the answer is HubSpot. Book a build conversation.
